A variation of the federal income tax Form 1040, Form 1040-EZ, can be used by United States citizens who are filing as single or married-filing-jointly. To qualify, the individual(s) must meet the following criteria:
- total income under $100,000
- interest income under $1,500
- income only from wages, interest, unemployment compensation, and Alaska Permanent Fund dividends
- are under 65 years old (both if married-filing-jointly)
- do not have any adjustments to income
- claiming only the standard deduction
- not claiming any other tax credits except Earned Income Credit
The benefits of using Form 1040-EZ is that it is generally easier and less time-consuming to fill out and is processed faster by the IRS.
