There Once was a Tax for Disagreeing With The-King-Wannabe

Kings found it effective to tax enemies and hope they put up with it. In 1655, Oliver Cromwell levied taxes against the Royalists who were still hanging around England after he took over.  Cromwell turned around and used some of the money he took from the grumbling Royalists to fund a militia that fought against other Royalists.
