The IRS Announces Change to E-file Opening Date: January 30 Now Marks the Beginning of Tax Season

The IRS will delay the beginning of tax season by eight full days.  Today, the IRS announced that it plans to open the 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on January 30, 2013.  This announcement follows the tax law changes made by the American Taxpayer Relief Act, the Congressional agreement used to combat the fiscal cliff.

The IRS used to make this easy when they gave everyone a  Publication. 2043—the IRS tax refund schedule.  Because unexpected circumstances led to refund delays last year, which violated the public’s service expectations and caused serious backlash, the IRS has decided not to publish a refund schedule this year.

Fiscal Cliff Updates - January 2, 2013

Recent legislation, passed January 1, 2013, led to the enactment of the American Taxpayer Relief Act.  This Act saves America from going off the fiscal cliff.  The Act prevents many of the tax hikes that technically went into effect just before members of the Congress agreed on the terms and conditions of the American Taxpayer Relief Act.
