However, when you start a new return, you need to enter the Federal information first, then continue on to State returns. When you click Proceed to e-file, you will have the choice NOT to file the Federal return and to file the State return only.

How or can I e-file multiple State returns?  (back to top)

  • Yes, you can file multiple State returns easily with one Federal return.
  • After you have completed or loaded a save Federal return, at the States section, you can choose the State and the form you want to file and start to enter information.
  • After you have completed your first State return, you then have the option of choosing another State and another form to continue. All of the State returns you prepared will be listed under the States section.
  • When you are ready to e-file, select (check) the State returns you want to e-file and click Proceed to e-file. You can then choose to e-file or not to e-file the Federal and the State returns at the summary page.

I e-filed my Federal and my State return. My Federal return was accepted, but my State return was rejected because of an error in the Tax Statement (W-2, 1099, etc.). It seems I can't make changes to the Tax Statements to revise my State return. What should I do?  (back to top)

  • You are right. An accepted Federal e-file is a sealed record. You can change information in the States section, but not the Tax Statements section.
  • You will need to start a new return, enter all Federal information with the correct Tax Statements and file a State-only return at Proceed to e-file summary page.
  • If you have chosen eSmart Tax Deluxe, Premium or Signature service, you will be able to clone the Federal return easily to continue with a State-only return.

I selected and prepared a wrong State form. How do I revise or choose a different one?  (back to top)

Under the States section, you can choose and prepare multiple States as well as multiple forms from the same State. Before you click Proceed to e-file, you can check or un-check the State forms you prepared to e-file, and submit only the form(s) you want.

Some State tax withholding information was not transferred from my Tax Statements (1099-G, e.g.). What should I do?  (back to top)

Also some States require that State withholding be entered with the Tax Statements section (W-2, W-2G, 1099-R).
