We’re all human.  Making mistakes is common and even though efiling your return significantly reduces the risk of making mistakes on your taxes, something may still happen.  Perhaps you got a form in the mail today that needs to be documented on your return.  Maybe you just noticed that an amount from a W-2 got typo-ed.  What can you do if you just submitted your return and eSmart Tax says it’s “submitted”?

Transmitting your return to the IRS is like sliding your return in the “flat letters” mailbox at the post office.  After you have completed the checkout process and received an order number, you will not be able to make any changes to your return.

If the efile is rejected by the IRS or state tax agency for any reason, you can sign in to your eSmart Tax account and make changes to your return at that point.

However, if your tax return is accepted by the IRS, you will need to file an amended return (Form 1040X) if you must make changes.  The experts in our powerful network of professionals at Liberty Tax Service can help you file an amended return.  Find a Liberty Tax Service office near you.
