You thought the whole tax topic was dead when you filed your Form 4868. After all, 4 months is quite the time crunch. It’s just long enough for things to get crazy hectic and when something’s gotta give, we understand that sometimes that something is your tax return. Perhaps, it wasn’t the everyday crazy that we don’t expect—maybe you were waiting on an important tax document. Maybe you were underway and serving our country. No matter what the reason for filing a Form 4868, it was in your best interest to file an extension. Now that it’s October, the tax time crunch is back! Sign in and finish today.

When is Your Tax Return Due?

The deadline for filing your tax return after the IRS grants and extension is midnight, October 15 (local time). It is important to remember that a Form 4868 only extended your time to file the paperwork associated with your return NOT an extension to pay any tax due. Any unpaid tax due back in April is still subject to penalties and interest charges from the IRS.

What Happens if I Forgot to File an Extension too?

If you missed the tax filing deadline last April, it is in your best interest to keep the penalties and interest from piling up and file your tax return as soon as possible. Penalties and interest will continue to accrue the longer your wait to pay and file.
