Since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all Americans or legal residents are now required to have health insurance or a coverage exemption. Otherwise, you will be subject to an ACA penalty. The new tax year is approaching and it’s important to be aware of the dates and deadlines to avoid these penalties. Here’s a list of dates that will come into effect for the upcoming tax season.
November 1: First day of Open Enrollment!
This is the first day of the year when the Marketplace will be open for you to enroll in coverage, switch plans, or apply for subsidies for the 2016 health insurance plan year. This is also a great time for you to update your information and take a look at other plans offered by the Marketplace. Please note, open enrollment dates are subject to change each year.
*Don’t forget that April 15, 2015 was the last day to file your taxes or apply for a 6-month extension*
December 31: Coverage ends for all 2015 Marketplace plans. Check your Marketplace account to see if your plan auto-renewed.
January 1: First day 2016 health insurance coverage can begin.
February 15: Last day to enroll in 2016 health coverage.
April 18: Last day to file taxes or apply for a 6-month filing extension.
